infant Colic & gastrointestinal issues

If your healthy, well-fed infant cries for 3 hours or more a day, then they may be diagnosed as having colic.

Colic usually relates to gastrointestinal issues such as trapped gas due to an immature digestive system and/or and immature nervous system.

Having a baby that suffers from colic can be an all-encompassing experience. I very quickly learnt about the reality of severe colic with my first child and to be honest the first few months were a blur of sleepless nights, doctors visits and sheer desperation. Parents are often dismissed by medical professionals and told ‘It’s just colic’, but the hours watching your tiny little one cry and feeling helpless can be excruciating for parents.

Paediatric massage and digestive relief movements can work with the gastrointestinal tract and help alleviate symptoms of colic, gas and constipation, offering your baby more comfort and ease. Focusing on digestive massage and movements will help move trapped gas as well as work with the immature digestive system, while the full body or even partial massage sequences, can work on their nervous system relaxing their little body allowing them to release tension that can also exacerbate digestive issues.

While babies tend to have developing sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, a newborns’ sympathetic nervous system is more active initially (known as fight or flight) and is also stronger in preterm infants. By using regular Paediatric Massage it will work with the parasympathetic nervous system (literally referred to as ‘rest and digest’) and help educate and encourage their little body to unclench, teaching the body it is safe and come back to a state of relax and release. As you can imagine a more relaxed body makes for easier digestion (hence rest and digest). By using digestive massage and body movements you can help initiate the release of trapped gas or constipation as the full body massage will help relax the body and engage and encourage the parasympathetic nervous system into a state of clam so you can spend more time connecting and playing with your tiny person. Paediatric Massage also a beautiful way to bond, allowing you more time to enjoy your little one and this precious moment of your lives.

Touch is the universal language of love.

It requires no words, no explanation, no deeper level of communication, it speaks louder than any language and is understood the world over.

Touch is just love in motion.
